Beyond the Visible: Tracing Subtle Rhythms and Infinite Patterns in the Work of Laurens Mostert

Mostert’s compositions are meditations on perception; where repetition, light, and subtle shifts reveal infinite complexity within apparent simplicity.

Laurens Mostert’s work finds its roots in the Dutch ZERO movement, a post-war artistic philosophy that embraced minimalism, repetition, and the interplay of light and material. Deeply influenced by Jan Schoonhoven’s structured reliefs, Mostert began by experimenting with similar forms—grids, monochromes, and rhythmic surfaces that emphasized calm and clarity. Over time, his practice evolved away from strict minimalism toward a more personal visual language, where subtle transitions, tonal variations, and layered structures became central. His Lumina series marked a turning point, exploring the equal weight of black and white, and reflecting his long-standing fascination with infinity, perception, and the quiet systems that organize our world.

BIO

Laurens Mostert (b. 1986) is a Dutch artist based in the Netherlands. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague, his practice is rooted in the conceptual legacy of the Dutch ZERO movement, particularly influenced by Jan Schoonhoven. Mostert began creating minimal reliefs in 2015, later evolving his work toward two-dimensional compositions that integrate light, subtle color variations, and pattern.

His signature style—seen in his Lumina series—reflects a fascination with infinity, perception, and philosophical concepts drawn from Taoism and minimal music. Through a process of repetition and reduction, Mostert creates contemplative works that explore the tension between simplicity and complexity, order and impermanence.

FRAGMENTS OF INFINITY

Laurens Mostert’s works do not demand attention—they reward it. Through quiet precision and deliberate restraint, he creates visual spaces that act like breathing rooms: expansive, balanced, and open to interpretation. His use of monochromes, intervals, and linear rhythms invites a slowed-down way of seeing, one that mirrors the act of contemplation itself. In a world saturated with noise and speed, Mostert’s practice becomes a subtle rebellion—a commitment to stillness, nuance, and the poetry of the near-invisible.
